Int. documentary feature, 68 min
The Western Cape region in South Africa, a diverse and spectacular area on Earth, is the subject of the documentary film " Western Cape – Africa´s garden eden".
This province stretches over 400 km north and 500 km east along the coasts of both the Atlantic and Indian Oceans and is just over one-tenth the size of South Africa. The region has a unique flora and fauna, with over 500 plant species of different colors and shapes that exist only around Table Mountain. It's also a melting pot of all skin colors, ethnic and religious groups, with over seven million people living in the area.
The documentary takes viewers on a journey around Table Mountain, searching for people who live in paradise in the most diverse ways, all united by an ancient African philosophy: Ubuntu. Ubuntu means "I am because you are," which emphasizes public spirit, togetherness, and caring for each other. The film uses Ubuntu as the kit that connects the episodic stories and leads them to each other.
One of the people highlighted in the documentary is Lindy Taverner, who discovered the special features of the kelp forest years ago. Algae and seaweed are a rich source of proteins, minerals, and vitamins, and she regularly goes freediving with her friends to harvest them. In the film, we dive into the kelp forests with Lindy, James, and Mark, and learn about the tremendous abundance of life forms in the currents along the coasts.
The documentary also explores the tourist suburbs of Camps Bay and Clifton, with their beautiful beaches, and Cape Town, the capital of the Western Cape, which is one of the largest cities in South Africa. Cape Town is famous for its landmark Table Mountain, which dominates the city's skyline, and is home to six national parks that make up the diversity of the Cape region.
The documentary also follows Dede Ntsoelengoe, a tourist guide on Robben Island prison, who was a fellow prisoner with Nelson Mandela. Mandela became his mentor, and the two remained in touch until the end of their lives. Dede reports on Mandela's generosity, dignity, and aura, and criticizes the willingness of the black population to make more of their lives.
The documentary shows Lindy's workshop, where 30 guests, including food influencers, professional chefs, and interested gourmets, are learning about healthy and sustainable diets. Lindy, who lives consciously and slows down, shares the same philosophy with Franz Muhl, who has lived in Scarborough for 22 years and runs his in-house brewery.
Or we get to know the German Kitesurfer Diethelm Schussler, who runs a guesthouse in Sunset Beach. Looking after his staff he decided to buy a house. The film ends there with a garage-party and the 5 families living there together.
" Western Cape – Africa´s garden eden" showcases the beauty, diversity, and uniqueness of the Western Cape and the people who call it home. The documentary reminds viewers of the importance of public spirit, togetherness, and caring for each other, and inspires them to live a conscious and sustainable life.
